A Year After Central America Hurricanes, Granting a New Designation for Temporary Protected Status Remains Urgent
CHICAGO — In November 2020, Central America was pummeled by two devastating hurricanes just two weeks apart that caused widespread flooding and landslides, impacting more than 7.5 million people in the region. Thousands of people were displaced and many lives were lost due to the storms. A year after the disasters, there remains an urgent need for the Biden administration to grant new Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designations — a humanitarian program that allows foreign nationals already residing in the United States to continue working lawfully — to all impacted countries, including Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and El Salvador. Beyond the temporary protections, the US Congress and the Biden administration should be working together to amend US Immigration Law in ways that allow long term TPS recipients to apply for legal permanent residency visas.
“TPS provides security for those already living and working in the U.S., and who cannot be sent back to countries that are still rebuilding: their life is here now,” said Oscar Chacón, executive director and co-founder of Alianza Americas. “As a country, we must stand up for the people who have nothing to go back to, and welcome them into our society with the legal protections that can ensure their safe future.”
On November 17, Alianza Americas and over 30 other civil society groups held a rally and protest before the White House, calling on the Biden administration to finally grant Central American TPS designations. The rally follows months of pressure on the White House around the need to grant new TPS designations, with over 70 Members of Congress expressing support for using TPS to support recovery efforts in Central America in a letter released in February.
“By granting a new TPS designation, the Biden administration can provide an immediate humanitarian reprieve to the Hondurans, Guatemalans, Salvadorans, and Nicaraguans residing in the U.S. and whose remittances back home are critical to rebuilding the region,” said Yanira Arias, Alianza Americas’ national campaigns manager, and a long term recipient of TPS. “It’s past time that the Biden administration take this basic step in order to demonstrate its commitment to implementing immigration policies that are truly fair and humane.”

Un año después de los huracanes Eta e Iota en Centroamérica, sigue siendo urgente otorgar una nueva designación para TPS
CHICAGO — En noviembre de 2020, Centroamérica fue golpeada por Eta e Iota, dos huracanes devastadores con solo dos semanas de diferencia que causaron inundaciones y deslizamientos de tierra generalizados, que afectaron a más de 7.5 millones de personas en la región. Miles de personas fueron desplazadas y muchas vidas se perdieron debido a las tormentas. Un año después de los desastres, sigue existiendo una necesidad urgente de que la administración Biden otorgue nuevas designaciones del Estatus de Protección Temporal (TPS, por sus siglas en inglés), un programa humanitario que permite a los extranjeros que ya residen en los Estados Unidos continuar trabajando de manera autorizada, a todos los países afectados, incluidos Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua y El Salvador. Más allá de las protecciones temporales, el Congreso de los EE. UU. y la administración Biden deberían trabajar juntos para enmendar la Ley de Inmigración de manera que permitan a las personas beneficiarias de TPS de largo plazo solicitar visas de residencia permanente legal.

El 17 de noviembre, Alianza Americas junto a más de 30 grupos de sociedad civil realizaron una manifestación y protesta ante la Casa Blanca, pidiendo a la administración Biden que finalmente otorgue las designaciones de TPS a estas naciones de Centroamérica. La manifestación sigue a meses de presión sobre la Casa Blanca en torno a la necesidad de otorgar nuevas designaciones de TPS, con más de 70 miembros del Congreso expresando su apoyo al uso de TPS para apoyar los esfuerzos de recuperación en Centroamérica en una carta publicada en febrero.
“Al otorgar una nueva designación de TPS, la administración Biden puede brindar un alivio humanitario inmediato a los hondureños, guatemaltecos, salvadoreños y nicaragüenses que residen en los Estados Unidos y cuyas remesas a sus familiares en sus respectivos países son fundamentales para la reconstrucción de la región”, dijo Yanira Arias, gerente de campañas nacionales de Alianza Americas, y beneficiaria de largo plazo de TPS “Ya es hora de que la administración Biden dé este paso básico para demostrar su compromiso de implementar políticas de inmigración que sean verdaderamente justas y humanas”.
