A Year After Central America Hurricanes, Granting a New Designation for Temporary Protected Status Remains Urgent
CHICAGO β In November 2020, Central America was pummeled by two devastating hurricanes just two weeks apart that caused widespread flooding and landslides, impacting more than 7.5 million people in the region. Thousands of people were displaced and many lives were lost due to the storms. A year after the disasters, there remains an urgent need for the Biden administration to grant new Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designations β a humanitarian program that allows foreign nationals already residing in the United States to continue working lawfully β to all impacted countries, including Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and El Salvador. Beyond the temporary protections, the US Congress and the Biden administration should be working together to amend US Immigration Law in ways that allow long term TPS recipients to apply for legal permanent residency visas.
βTPS provides security for those already living and working in the U.S., and who cannot be sent back to countries that are still rebuilding: their life is here now,β said Oscar ChacΓ³n, executive director and co-founder of Alianza Americas. βAs a country, we must stand up for the people who have nothing to go back to, and welcome them into our society with the legal protections that can ensure their safe future.β
On November 17, Alianza Americas and over 30 other civil society groups held a rally and protest before the White House, calling on the Biden administration to finally grant Central American TPS designations. The rally follows months of pressure on the White House around the need to grant new TPS designations, with over 70 Members of Congress expressing support for using TPS to support recovery efforts in Central America in a letter released in February.
βBy granting a new TPS designation, the Biden administration can provide an immediate humanitarian reprieve to the Hondurans, Guatemalans, Salvadorans, and Nicaraguans residing in the U.S. and whose remittances back home are critical to rebuilding the region,β said Yanira Arias, Alianza Americasβ national campaigns manager, and a long term recipient of TPS. βItβs past time that the Biden administration take this basic step in order to demonstrate its commitment to implementing immigration policies that are truly fair and humane.β

CHICAGO β En noviembre de 2020, CentroamΓ©rica fue golpeada por Eta e Iota, dos huracanes devastadores con solo dos semanas de diferencia que causaron inundaciones y deslizamientos de tierra generalizados, que afectaron a mΓ‘s de 7.5 millones de personas en la regiΓ³n. Miles de personas fueron desplazadas y muchas vidas se perdieron debido a las tormentas. La manifestaciΓ³n sigue a meses de presiΓ³n sobre la Casa Blanca en torno a la necesidad de otorgar nuevas designaciones de TPS, con mΓ‘s de 70 miembros del Congreso expresando su apoyo al uso de TPS para apoyar los esfuerzos de recuperaciΓ³n en CentroamΓ©rica en una carta publicada en febrero.
