Turning our back on asylum seekers is an indefensible human rights violation
The following is a joint statement from Alianza Americas and Presente.org:
CHICAGO – Yesterday, speaking on the issue of allowing entry to new asylum seekers at the southern border, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki stated that the “vast majority of people” who come to the U.S.-Mexico border seeking asylum will be “turned away.” In response to this comment by the White House, Alianza Americas and Presente.org released the following statement:
“For four years, our communities lived under the rule of a racist and xenophobic President, hell-bent on vilifying and demonizing migrant communities. During his campaign, President Biden promised to address ‘the Trump-created humanitarian crisis at our border’ on Day One. Unfortunately, after a successful first three weeks of Executive Orders working to address the many challenges of our asylum and immigration system, the administration has decided to turn its back on those seeking protection, because they are unable to find it in their own countries.
As organizations committed to creating an inclusive, equitable and sustainable way of life for migrant communities living in the United States and across the Americas, we are disappointed by the Biden-Harris administration’s decision to only support a handful of asylum seekers while rejecting others.
“The Biden-Harris administration knows precisely why so many people from the Central America-Mexico region continue to flee their countries of origin. The region is still experiencing political instability, an economic crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic, and most recently, a devastating climate disaster. Forced migration is not a choice that can be put off for a time that is more convenient. These are life or death decisions,” said Oscar Chacón, Alianza Americas’ executive director.
“If President Biden truly wants to transform immigration and asylum policies, he needs to keep his promise and not turn his back on those seeking protection. As the President said, ‘Immigration is essential to who we are as a nation, our core values, and our aspirations for our future.’ The ultimate goal of a truly new approach to humanitarian crisis and migration should be to transform Central American nations into places from where no one has to flee. But in the short term, we must support and protect people seeking safe-haven,” said Matt Nelson, executive director of Presente.org.

Presidente Biden: No le dé la espalda a las personas migrantes en búsqueda de protección
Dar la espalda a los migrantes es una violación indefendible de derechos humanos
La siguiente es una declaración conjunta de Alianza Americas and Presente.org:
CHICAGO – Ayer, la secretaria de prensa de la Casa Blanca, Jen Psaki, declaró que la “gran mayoría de las personas” que vienen a la frontera entre Estados Unidos y México serán “rechazadas”, al hacer referencia al tema de permitir la entrada de nuevos solicitantes de asilo. En respuesta a este comentario de la Casa Blanca, Alianza Americas y Presente.org emiten el siguiente comunicado:
“Durante cuatro años nuestras comunidades vivieron bajo el gobierno de un presidente racista y xenófobo empeñado en difamar y demonizar a las comunidades de inmigrantes. Durante su campaña, el presidente Biden prometió abordar ‘la crisis humanitaria creada por Trump en nuestra frontera’ desde el primer día de su administración. Desafortunadamente, después de emitir órdenes ejecutivas acertadas, que abordan muchos de los desafíos de nuestro sistema de inmigración, la administración ha decidido darle la espalda a los migrantes, muchos de los cuales buscan asilo.
Como organizaciones comprometidas con crear una forma de vida inclusiva, equitativa y sustentable para las comunidades migrantes en los Estados Unidos y en las Américas, estamos decepcionados por la decisión de la administración Biden-Harris de apoyar únicamente a un grupo de solicitantes de asilo y rechazar a otros.
La administración Biden-Harris sabe exactamente por qué tantas personas continúan huyendo de los países en el corredor Centroamérica-México. La región todavía está experimentando inestabilidad política, una crisis económica, la pandemia de covid-19 y, más recientemente, una devastadora crisis climática. La migración forzada no es una opción que pueda posponerse para un momento más conveniente. Se trata de decisiones de vida o muerte”, dijo Oscar Chacón, director ejecutivo de Alianza Americas.
“Si el presidente Biden realmente quiere transformar la política de inmigración debe cumplir su promesa y no dar la espalda a las comunidades inmigrantes. Como dijo el propio presidente, “la inmigración es esencial para quienes somos como nación, nuestros valores fundamentales y nuestras aspiraciones para el futuro. La meta última de un abordaje nuevo ante la crisis humanitaria y las migraciones debería ser la transformación de los países centroamericanos en naciones donde nadie tenga que salir huyendo. Pero mientras tanto, debemos apoyar y proteger a las personas que buscan un lugar seguro donde vivir,”, dijo Matt Nelson, director ejecutivo de Presente.org.
