Together for Democracy, Human Rights, and Justice: A path toward Resilience and Resistance
Leading Human and Civil Rights Group Advances Values-Based Call to Action in Opposition to the Dangerous Trump Agenda
The following is a statement from Presente.org’s Executive Director, Matt Nelson:
Washington, DC –– As we face a pivotal moment in history, Presente’s hundreds of thousands of member activists across the country and in Puerto Rico commit to strengthening communities’ resilience and providing clear, actionable steps to defend human rights, civic institutions, and our shared values. Our ongoing #FreedomForAll project and the recently released How We Win book offers tools to safeguard local communities, uphold democracy, and support the human dignity and freedom of those most targeted by the Trump agenda.
This moment underscores the need for community care, solidarity, and mutual aid, highlighting how progressive movements organize for vibrant, inclusive democracy. In the face of a government that will force mass deportations, engage in rabid sexism, transphobia, and homophobia, cultivate overt appeals to white supremacy, and enforce brutal crackdowns on protesters, we have a duty and responsibility to act, to build, and to resist hate, fear, and political violence. Compassion, human rights, dignity, and love must guide our collective path forward. In short, we will continue to build and strengthen social movements that shift power and deliver real material wins for our communities.
Grounded in principles of peace and justice, we urge communities to take action that fosters resilience and sustainable change, urging the importance of strategic efforts to encourage democratic engagement and ongoing, positive resistance. As deportation infrastructure remains in place, and with potential federal-level transitions impacting communities of color, immigrants, and low-income communities, we will continue efforts to ensure fair policies and equitable governance.
In the face of rising fascist threats and deepening political divisions, we’ve released our new book, How We Win: Energizing Strategies, Agendas, and Voters (New York & London: Routledge, 2024). The book is an essential resource for activists, organizers, voters, and communities on the frontlines of the fight for justice, offering models for how to build power, mobilize, and ensure that our democratic systems serve everyone.
