Immigrant Communities Encouraged by Passage of Build Back Better Act in the U.S. House of Representatives
But disappointed with how little is included on immigration
CHICAGO —Today, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to approve the Build Back Better Act, including provisions that protect undocumented populations from deportation and increase the availability of work visas. In reaction, Alianza Americas, a network of 50 migrant-led organizations, and the national digital organizing group, Presente.org, issued the following response:
“We are encouraged by the passage of the Build Back Better Act by the U.S. House of Representatives. There is no question that if this bill is ultimately enacted into law, it would bring much needed changes in U.S. law. However, when it comes to immigrant communities, what is included in this bill is not a pathway to legal permanent residency visas. It is a modest step in the right direction towards establishing freedom for all in the country: freedom to work, to travel, and to live with peace of mind without fearing deportation,” said Oscar Chacon, executive director of Alianza Americas. “Looking ahead, we call on the Democratic caucus in the U.S. Senate to promptly pass their version of this bill, with the minimum immigration reforms included in the House version, and to finally send such a bill to the President for his signature.”

Pero es decepcionante lo poco que se incluye en inmigración
CHICAGO — Hoy, la Cámara de Representantes de los Estados Unidos votó para aprobar la Ley para una Mejor Reconstrucción (Build Back Better), que incluye disposiciones que protegen a las poblaciones indocumentadas de la deportación y aumentan la disponibilidad de visas de trabajo. En reacción, Alianza Americas, una red de 50 organizaciones lideradas por inmigrantes y la plataforma de organización digital Presente.org, emiten la siguiente respuesta:
“Nos alienta la aprobación de la Ley para una Mejor Reconstrucción por parte de la Cámara de Representantes de Estados Unidos. No hay duda en que si este proyecto finalmente se convierte en ley, traerá cambios muy necesarios en la legislación estadounidense. Sin embargo, cuando se trata de comunidades de inmigrantes, lo que se incluye en este proyecto de ley no es un camino hacia visas de residencia permanente legal. Es un paso modesto en la dirección correcta hacia el establecimiento de la libertad para todas las personas en el país: libertad para trabajar, viajar y vivir con tranquilidad sin temor a la deportación”, declaró Oscar Chacón, director ejecutivo de Alianza Americas. “De cara al futuro, pedimos a los Demócratas en el Senado de los Estados Unidos que apruebe rápidamente su versión de este proyecto de ley, con las reformas migratorias mínimas incluidas en la versión de la Cámara, y que finalmente envíe dicho proyecto de ley al presidente para su firma”.
