COP26’s Success Relies on Governments Making Binding Commitments to Address the Climate Crisis
The following is a joint statement from Presente.org and Alianza Americas in response to the upcoming UN Climate Change Conference COP26 in Glasgow, Scotland:
“Social movements from across the globe have been sounding the alarm and letting governments know that we need real climate action now. COP26 presents an opportunity for world leaders to make binding agreements to protect our planet and actually take transformative steps to end dependence on fossil fuels. Hurricanes and wildfires are intensifying, fossil fuel extraction is harming our water and air, and low income, Black, Latin American-origin, Indigenous, and other people of color are bearing the brunt. It’s on the Biden administration and global leaders to make real investments in green infrastructure and simultaneously implement protocols to address climate related migration. Our planet and our communities have had enough,” said Matt Nelson, executive director of Presente.org.
“As world leaders descend on Glasgow for COP26, and as an organization with observer status, we will be paying close attention to President Biden and other world leaders’ commitments to addressing the climate crisis. In Glasgow, governments are meant to accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. What we’ve seen over the last few years are governments signing on to “net-zero” emission pledges that don’t get to the root causes of the climate crisis, a lack of leadership to end all fossil fuel extraction projects, and global communities migrating as a result of climate catastrophes. Latin America and the Caribbean have been hit particularly hard and we are witnessing thousands of climate refugees traveling north seeking protection. As negotiations commence, we expect governments to take immediate action to address climate migration issues and for corporations and governments to commit to a just energy transition and end their atrocious drive to generate wealth at the expense of front line communities of color,” said Oscar Chacon, executive director of Alianza Americas.

El éxito de la COP26 depende de que los gobiernos asuman compromisos para abordar la crisis climática
El siguiente es un pronunciamiento conjunto de Presente.org y Alianza Americas en respuesta a la próxima Conferencia de las Naciones Unidas sobre el Cambio Climático COP26, en Glasgow, Escocia:
“Los movimientos sociales de todo el mundo han hecho sonar la alarma y han hecho saber a los gobiernos que necesitamos una acción climática real ahora. La COP26 presenta una oportunidad para que los líderes mundiales lleguen a acuerdos vinculantes para proteger nuestro planeta y, de hecho, tomen medidas transformadoras para poner fin a nuestra dependencia de los combustibles fósiles. Los huracanes y los incendios forestales se están intensificando, la extracción de combustibles fósiles está dañando nuestra agua y aire, y las personas negras de bajos ingresos, los de origen latinoamericano, los indígenas y otras personas de color son las personas más castigadas por esta crisis. Depende de la administración Biden y de los líderes mundiales realizar inversiones reales en infraestructura verde y simultáneamente implementar protocolos para abordar la migración relacionada con el clima. Nuestro planeta y nuestras comunidades han tenido suficiente”, dijo Matt Nelson, director ejecutivo de Presente.org.
“A medida que los líderes mundiales lleguen a Glasgow para la COP26, y como organización con estatus de observador, prestaremos mucha atención a los compromisos del presidente Biden y otros líderes mundiales para abordar la crisis climática. En Glasgow, los gobiernos están destinados a acelerar la acción hacia los objetivos del Acuerdo de París y la Convención Marco de las Naciones Unidas sobre el Cambio Climático. Lo que hemos visto en los últimos años es que los gobiernos firman compromisos de emisiones “netas cero” que no llegan a las causas fundamentales de la crisis climática, una falta de liderazgo para poner fin a todos los proyectos de extracción de combustibles fósiles y comunidades que migran como resultado de catástrofes climáticas.
