Federal Judge Blocks New DACA Applications, Legislation More Important Than Ever
CHICAGO – Today, U.S. District Court Judge Andrew S. Hanen blocked new applications for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program from moving forward. The following is a joint statement from Alianza Americas and Presente.org:
“Judge Hanen is a well-known judge by now when it comes to his clear anti-immigrant bias. Regretfully, the judiciary system has been stuffed by Republican presidents with conservative judges who are not driven by a commitment to serve the interests of common people, common sense and a commitment to deliver impartial justice. Instead, many of them rule based on racist and xenophobic prejudice. What the U.S. Congress must do is dare to abolish, once and for all, the deeply racist and xenophobic Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act passed in 1996. Immigrants are a blessing for the nation, and our laws should reflect that,” stated Oscar Chacon, executive director of Alianza Americas.
“Today’s anti-immigrant ruling by Judge Hanen points to the urgent need for Congress to once and for all pass immigration legislation that would protect millions in this country. The future of the DACA program is still uncertain and we urge Senate Majority Leader Schumer, Speaker Pelosi, and President Biden to use the budget reconciliation process as a way for DACA recipients, TPS beneficiaries, essential workers and farmworkers to secure permanent residency visas to ensure the dignified inclusion of so many immigrants,” stated Matt Nelson, executive director of Presente.org.

Juez federal bloquea nuevas solicitudes de DACA: la legislación más importante que nunca
CHICAGO – Hoy, el juez federal de Texas Andrew Hanen bloqueó el avance de nuevas aplicaciones para el programa Acción Diferida para los Llegados en la Infancia (DACA, por sus siglas en inglés). Al respecto, Alianza Americas y Presente.org emiten el siguiente pronunciamiento conjunto:
“El juez Hanen es muy conocido por sus sesgo antiinmigrante. Lamentablemente, los presidentes republicanos han llenado el sistema judicial de jueces conservadores que no están motivados por el compromiso de servir a los intereses de la gente, el sentido común y el compromiso de brindar justicia imparcial. En cambio, muchos de ellos ejercen su rol basándose en prejuicios racistas y xenófobos. Lo que debe hacer el Congreso de los Estados Unidos es atreverse a abolir, de una vez por todas, la Ley de Reforma de la Inmigración Ilegal y Responsabilidad del Inmigrante, profundamente racista y xenófoba, aprobada en 1996. Las personas inmigrantes son una bendición para la nación y nuestras leyes deben reflejar eso”, dijo Oscar Chacón, director ejecutivo de Alianza Americas.
“El fallo antiinmigrante de hoy del juez Hanen apunta a la urgente necesidad de que el Congreso apruebe de una vez por todas una legislación migratoria que proteja a millones en este país. El futuro del programa DACA aún es incierto e instamos al líder de la mayoría del Senado Chuck Schumer, a la presidenta de la Cámara de Representantes Nancy Pelosi y el presidente Joe Biden a utilizar el proceso de reconciliación presupuestaria como una forma para que los beneficiarios de DACA, beneficiarios de TPS, trabajadores esenciales y agrícolas obtengan visas de residencia permanente para garantizar la inclusión digna de tantos inmigrantes”, dijo Matt Nelson, director ejecutivo de Presente.org.
