We Demand Permanent Protections For All on 9 Year
DACA Anniversary
CHICAGO –– Today marks nine years since immigrant youth were guaranteed temporary permission to stay in the U.S. through the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. While DACA has brought relief to some young immigrants making countless contributions to our nation, we know it’s not enough. Below you will find a joint statement from Alianza Americas and Presente.org:
“Nine years ago, the Obama Administration launched the DACA program offering temporary relief for eligible immigrants who came to the U.S. as children. For decades, immigrant communities have been fighting to pass legislation seeking to gain permanent protections not just for young immigrants, but for every single undocumented immigrant residing in the U.S.
If the Senate leadership were determined to do so, they could pass legislation that would enable millions of young immigrants, like those who have benefited from DACA, to apply for permanent residency visas. The US House of Representatives has already taken positive action on this matter. We need our elected leaders to come through for families who have been waiting for far too long,” stated Oscar Chacon, executive director of Alianza Americas.
“Nearly a decade ago we won temporary relief for immigrant youth, and as I reflect on the past nine years as a DACA recipient, I cannot help but think of the great opportunities this opened for me. But temporary was never the end goal, and we are beyond the time to pass permanent protections for all immigrants. Today we call on President Biden and Congress to deliver on what was promised – a solution that would ultimately allow all undocumented immigrants to apply for U.S. citizenship,” stated Dulce Dominguez, development coordinator of Alianza Americas.
“In 2010, four brave undocumented youth led a 1,500 mile march from Miami, Florida to Washington, D.C. in what is known as the Trail of Dreams. This journey to the U.S. Capitol to advocate for the passage of another piece of immigration legislation known as the DREAM Act inspired many young immigrants and pushed the Obama Administration to give us DACA. As we reflect on these past nine years, we can’t forget about all of the brave young people who have been fighting for permanent protections, not just for them, but for all of our immigrant families,” stated Matt Nelson, executive director of Presente.org.
“I’ve renewed my DACA four times in nine years, always thinking that it might be the last. DACA has provided a path for thousands, including myself, to provide for ourselves and our families. In many instances we’ve become our parents’ retirement and social security. While I appreciate the many opportunities, DACA is only a temporary solution. We need permanent protections and we call on President Biden and Congress to deliver on this overdue promise,” stated Erick Garcia, senior technologist of Presente.org.
“We will continue to work to transform existing legislation and public policies to ensure DACA recipients, as well as TPS holders, get the opportunity to apply for legal permanent residency and eventually U.S. citizenship. We still have a long way to go and will continue organizing to create an inclusive, equitable, and sustainable way of life for immigrant families,” concluded Chacon.

En el 9° aniversario de DACA exigimos protecciones permanentes para todas las personas beneficiarias
CHICAGO –– Hoy se cumplen nueve años desde que a los jóvenes inmigrantes se les garantizó un permiso temporal para permanecer en los Estados Unidos a través del programa de Acción Diferida para los Llegados en la Infancia (DACA, por sus siglas en inglés). Si bien DACA ha brindado alivio a algunos inmigrantes jóvenes que realizan innumerables contribuciones a nuestra nación, sabemos que no es suficiente. A continuación encontrará una declaración conjunta de Alianza Americas y Presente.org al respecto:
“Hace nueve años, la administración Obama lanzó el programa DACA que ofrece alivio temporal para las personas inmigrantes elegibles que llegaron a los Estados Unidos cuando eran niños. Durante décadas, las comunidades inmigrantes han estado luchando para aprobar leyes que buscan obtener protecciones permanentes no solo para los inmigrantes jóvenes, sino para cada persona nacida en el extranjero que vive en los Estados Unidos de forma no autorizada.
Si los líderes del Senado estuvieran decididos a hacerlo, podrían aprobar una propuesta de ley que permitiría a millones de jóvenes inmigrantes, como los que se han beneficiado de DACA, solicitar visas de residencia permanente. La Cámara de Representantes ya ha tomado una acción positiva sobre este asunto. Necesitamos que nuestros líderes electos apoyen a las familias que han estado esperando por mucho tiempo”, aseguró Oscar Chacón, director ejecutivo de Alianza Americas.
“Hace casi una década obtuvimos un alivio temporal para los jóvenes inmigrantes, y mientras reflexiono sobre los últimos nueve años como beneficiaria de DACA, no puedo evitar pensar en las grandes oportunidades que esto me abrió. Pero lo temporal nunca fue el objetivo final, y estamos más allá del tiempo para aprobar protecciones permanentes para todas las personas inmigrantes. Hoy pedimos al presidente Biden y al Congreso que cumplan con lo prometido: una solución que, en última instancia, permita a todas las personas inmigrantes indocumentadas solicitar la ciudadanía estadounidense”, afirmó Dulce Domínguez, coordinadora de Desarrollo de Alianza Americas.
“En 2010, cuatro valientes jóvenes indocumentados encabezaron una marcha de 1,500 millas desde Miami, Florida hasta Washington, D.C. en lo que se conoce como el Sendero de los Sueños. Este viaje al Capitolio de los EE. UU. para abogar por la aprobación de otra ley de inmigración conocida como DREAM Act inspiró a muchos inmigrantes jóvenes y presionó a la administración Obama para que nos diera DACA. Al reflexionar sobre estos últimos nueve años, no podemos olvidarnos de todos los valientes jóvenes que han estado luchando por protecciones permanentes, no solo para ellos, sino para todas nuestras familias inmigrantes”, dijo Matt Nelson, director ejecutivo de Presente.org.
“He renovado mi DACA cuatro veces en nueve años, siempre pensando que podría ser la última. DACA ha proporcionado un camino para miles, incluyéndome a mí, para mantenernos a nosotros mismos y a nuestras familias. En muchos casos, nos hemos convertido en la jubilación y la seguridad social de nuestros padres. Si bien aprecio las muchas oportunidades, DACA es solo una solución temporal. Necesitamos protecciones permanentes y pedimos al presidente Biden y al Congreso que cumplan esta deuda”, agregó Erick García, especialista en Tecnología de Presente.org.
“Continuaremos trabajando para transformar la legislación y las políticas públicas existentes para garantizar que las personas beneficiarias de DACA, así como las de TPS, tengan la oportunidad de solicitar la residencia permanente y, finalmente, la ciudadanía estadounidense. Todavía tenemos un largo camino por recorrer y seguiremos organizándonos para crear una forma de vida inclusiva, equitativa y sostenible para las familias inmigrantes”, concluyó Chacón.
