Tax Day Should Benefit All Immigrants
The following is a joint statement from Presente.org and Alianza Americas:
CHICAGO –– On Tax Day 2021, we call on President Biden and Congress to invest in immigrant communities by extending COVID relief economic benefits for all and ensuring permanent status for everyone living in the United States, regardless of their current immigration status. Congress must also stop funding detention and instead invest in legal representation, housing, transportation, healthcare and other essential needs of migrant communities.
Overall, immigrant workers contributed nearly $500 billion in taxes in 2019, which includes the $30.6 billion in taxes that undocumented workers pay. Immigrant households contribute hundreds of billions of dollars in federal, state, and local taxes nationwide and hold a tremendous amount of spending power. Immigrant workers play a huge role in the U.S. economy and in 2019 alone, Temporary Protected Status (TPS) holders paid $2.5 billion in taxes and Deferred Action For Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients paid $6.2 billion in taxes. However, undocumented workers are still excluded from the economic benefits other taxpayers receive.
“It is time for the President and Congress to recognize the positive impact of migration to the U.S. Not only do immigrant workers pay billions of dollars in taxes each year, they are also essential members of our society. Congress must do its part to ensure that, at a minimum, TPS holders, DACA recipients, and essential workers are provided with permanent status this year,” stated Oscar Chacón, executive director of Alianza Americas.
“Immigrant workers contribute billions in taxes each year and yet many continue to be excluded from the benefits many of us receive. Instead of wasting taxpayer dollars on inhumane immigration detention centers, militarization, and war, President Biden and Congress should invest in legal representation for migrants seeking asylum and healthcare for Latinx communities still struggling in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic,” stated Matt Nelson, executive director of Presente.org.

Los impuestos deberían beneficiar a todas las personas inmigrantes
El siguiente es un pronunciamiento conjunto de Alianza Americas y Presente.org:
CHICAGO –– En el Día de los Impuestos de 2021 pedimos al presidente Biden y al Congreso que inviertan en las comunidades de inmigrantes extendiendo los beneficios económicos del alivio de COVID-19 para todas las personas y garantizar el estatus permanente para todos los que viven en los Estados Unidos, independientemente de su estatus migratorio actual. El Congreso también debe dejar de financiar la detención y, en cambio, invertir en representación legal, vivienda, transporte, atención médica y otras necesidades esenciales de las comunidades de migrantes.
En general, los trabajadores inmigrantes contribuyeron con casi $500 mil millones en impuestos en 2019, que incluyen los $ 30,6 mil millones en impuestos que pagan los trabajadores indocumentados. Los hogares de inmigrantes contribuyen con cientos de miles de millones de dólares en impuestos federales, estatales y locales en todo el país y tienen una enorme cantidad de poder adquisitivo. Los trabajadores inmigrantes juegan un papel muy importante en la economía de los EE. UU. Sólo en 2019, las personas beneficiarias del Estatus de Protección Temporal (TPS, por sus siglas en inglés) pagaron $ 2.5 mil millones en impuestos y las personas beneficiarias de la Acción Diferida para los Llegados en la Infancia (DACA) pagaron $6.2 mil millones en impuestos. Sin embargo, los trabajadores indocumentados aún están excluidos de los beneficios económicos que reciben otros contribuyentes.
“Es hora de que la administración y el Congreso reconozcan el impacto positivo de la migración a los EE. UU. Los trabajadores inmigrantes no solo pagan miles de millones de dólares en impuestos cada año, sino que también son miembros esenciales de nuestra sociedad. El Congreso debe hacer su parte para garantizar que, como mínimo, los beneficiarios de TPS, los beneficiarios de DACA y los trabajadores esenciales reciban un estatus permanente este año”, afirmó Oscar Chacón, director ejecutivo de Alianza Americas.
