Biden-Harris Administration Grants TPS for Haiti, Now We Need Action for Central American Nationals
The following is a joint statement from Alianza Americas and Presente.org in response to the Biden-Harris administration’s announcement to designate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to Haitian nationals:
This weekend, the Biden-Harris administration announced their decision to grant TPS to Haitian nationals. Thanks to the leadership of many Black, Latinx, and migrant led organizations from across the country, the administration heard our demand loud and clear and made the right decision.
“We commend the Biden-Harris administration for their decision to provide a new TPS designation for Haitian nationals. This has been one of the demands that many Latin American and Caribbean immigrant communities made early on. The situation in Haiti has been deteriorating with human rights violations, poverty, and social unrest caused by the pandemic, further limiting the ability of Haitians to return safely to their country. Over 100,000 Haitians residing in the U.S. will now be able to live without the fear of being detained and deported back to the country they fled from,” said Oscar Chacón, executive director of Alianza Americas.
“Presente.org and Alianza Americas are committed to permanent status, full human rights, and inclusion of migrant communities across the United States. We welcome the Biden-Harris administration’s decision to grant a new TPS designation for Haitian nationals and urge them to keep leading by issuing a new TPS designation to Central American nationals. The region has been ravaged by climate catastrophes, political instability, and the COVID-19 pandemic and we urge the administration to take swift action to protect immigrant families,” said Matt Nelson, executive director of Presente.org.
“This first step should ultimately lead to immigration policy that allows immigrants residing in the U.S. the opportunity to apply for permanent residency and citizenship. We also call on the administration to grant TPS for nationals from El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, and Nicaragua, who are equally deserving of this protection,” added Chacón.

La administración de Biden-Harris otorga TPS para Haití, ahora necesitamos acción para los países centroamericanos
El siguiente es un pronunciamiento conjunto de Alianza Americas y Presente.org en respuesta al anuncio de la administración Biden-Harris de designar el Estatus de Protección Temporal (TPS, por sus siglas en inglés) a nacionales de Haití:
Este fin de semana, la administración Biden-Harris anunció su decisión de otorgar TPS a ciudadanos haitianos. Gracias al liderazgo de muchas organizaciones dirigidas por negros, latinos y migrantes de todo el país, la administración escuchó nuestra demanda fuerte y clara, y tomó la decisión correcta.
“Felicitamos a la administración Biden-Harris por su decisión de proporcionar una nueva designación de TPS para ciudadanos haitianos. Esta ha sido una de las demandas que muchas comunidades inmigrantes latinoamericanas y caribeñas hicieron desde el inicio de la administración actual. La situación en Haití se ha deteriorado con las violaciones de derechos humanos, la pobreza y el malestar social causado por la pandemia de COVID-19, lo que limita aún más la capacidad de los haitianos para regresar a salvo a su país. Más de 100,000 haitianos que residen en los EE. UU. ahora podrán seguir viviendo sin temor a ser detenidos y deportados al país del que huyeron”, dijo Oscar Chacón, director ejecutivo de Alianza Americas.
“Presente.org y Alianza Americas están comprometidas con el estatus permanente, los derechos humanos plenos y la inclusión de las comunidades inmigrantes en los Estados Unidos. Damos la bienvenida a la decisión de la administración Biden-Harris de otorgar una nueva designación de TPS para los ciudadanos haitianos y los instamos a que sigan liderando mediante la emisión de una nueva designación de TPS a los ciudadanos centroamericanos. La región ha sido devastada por catástrofes climáticas, inestabilidad política y la pandemia e instamos a la administración a tomar medidas inmediatas para proteger a las familias inmigrantes”, dijo Matt Nelson, director ejecutivo de Presente.org.
“Este primer paso debería conducir en última instancia a una política de inmigración que permita a las personas inmigrantes que residen en los EE. UU. la oportunidad de solicitar la residencia permanente y la ciudadanía. También, hacemos un llamado a la administración para que otorgue TPS a los nacionales de El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala y Nicaragua, quienes igualmente merecen esta protección”, agregó Chacón.
