Immigrants Demand Legal Status, Access to Health and an End to Detention

WHAT: Alianza Americas and Presente.org will host a virtual press conference with Alianza Americas member organizations Central American Resource Center of Washington, D.C., Centro Romero of Chicago, and the Latino Commission on AIDS (NYC) to raise the voices of immigrant communities and provide reflections on the first 100 days of the Biden-Harris administration, as well as congressional gridlock around immigration legislation. Panelists will discuss their assessment of national and transnational immigration policy, the urgent need for access to healthcare for immigrants during the COVID-19 pandemic, and a call to end immigration detention and instead fund access to counsel, among other initiatives. The event will be conducted in English and Spanish. *Spanish-English / English-Spanish interpretation available*

For over 35 years, Centro Romero has been a community-based organization that serves the refugee immigrant population on the northeast side of Chicago. Our interrelated programs include the Youth Learning and Leadership Program, Family Services (encapsulating the Domestic Violence Prevention Program, the Public Benefits Program, and the New Americans Initiative), Adult Education, and Legal Services. These are essential services that support healthy personal and social development of participants. Our long-term organizational goal is to bridge a disenfranchised community of immigrants and refugees into mainstream American society as well as improving their opportunity for upward social mobility.
The Latino Commission on AIDS is a non-profit organization founded in 1990 in response to the unmet need for HIV/AIDS prevention and care for Latinx/Hispanics. Our public health mission is to address the impact of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, in the context of addressing health disparities, by spearheading health advocacy, promoting health education, developing and replicating evidence-based programs for PLWHA and high-risk communities, and by building capacity across the public health sector and strategic partners nationally.

QUÉ: Alianza Americas y Presente.org organizarán una conferencia de prensa virtual con las organizaciones miembros de Alianza Americas: Centro de Recursos Centroamericanos de Washington, DC; Centro Romero, Chicago, IL; y la Comisión Latina sobre el SIDA, NY, para levantar las voces de las comunidades inmigrantes y brindar reflexiones sobre los primeros 100 días de la administración Biden-Harris, así como el estancamiento del Congreso en torno a la legislación de inmigración. Los panelistas discutirán su evaluación de la política de inmigración nacional y transnacional, la necesidad urgente de acceso a la atención médica para las personas inmigrantes durante la pandemia de COVID-19 y un llamado para poner fin a la detención de inmigrantes y, en cambio, financiar el acceso a servicios legales, entre otras iniciativas. La Comisión Latina sobre el SIDA (Latino Commission on AIDS) es una organización sin fines de lucro fundada en 1990 en respuesta a la necesidad insatisfecha de prevención y atención del VIH / SIDA para personas latinas/hispanas. Nuestra misión de salud pública es abordar el impacto de la epidemia del VIH/SIDA, en el contexto de abordar las disparidades de salud, encabezando la defensa de la salud, promoviendo la educación sanitaria, desarrollando y replicando programas basados en evidencia para PVVS y comunidades de alto riesgo, y por creación de capacidad en todo el sector de la salud pública y los socios estratégicos a nivel nacional.
