The following is a joint statement from Alianza Americas and Presente.org:
CHICAGO –– Yesterday, President Joe Biden signed the American Rescue Plan Act, the most sweeping poverty-fighting bill in a generation. This is an important step to address inequities. However, the bill will leave out 9 million undocumented immigrants, many of whom have been fighting on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic for months and are sinking deeper into poverty.
“While the inclusion of immigrant children and those in mixed-status families is a step in the right direction, it is counterproductive to the public good to leave out millions of people who reside in the U.S. due to their lack of immigration status. One of the most important lessons of the COVID-19 pandemic is that no one should be left behind. To do so, makes everyone of us unsafe. Every person in need should be able to receive help during these trying times,” stated Oscar Chacón, executive director of Alianza Americas.
“We are encouraged to see that millions of Americans will soon receive much-needed relief as our country continues to face many hurdles in the midst of the ongoing pandemic. We’re disappointed, however, by missed opportunities like raising the federal minimum wage in the American Rescue Plan Act, which if it had been included, would have drastically improved the lives of many Latinx and migrant communities. We will continue to urge President Biden to keep his promise to support our families within his first 100 days in office,” stated Matt Nelson, executive director of Presente.org.
“Excluding our families from relief efforts will continue to exacerbate the gaps between the rich and poor leaving immigrants out of the economic recovery process. We hope the Biden administration will keep its commitment to treat all immigrants humanely, with respect, and work to provide relief for all,” added Chacón.

La aprobación de la Ley del Plan de Rescate Estadounidense es un paso muy necesario
Desafortunadamente, deja fuera a millones de inmigrantes que pagan impuestos.
La siguiente es una declaración conjunta de Alianza Americas y Presente.org:
CHICAGO –– Ayer, el presidente Joe Biden firmó el Plan de Rescate Estadounidense, una ley con la que se busca emprender una amplia lucha contra la pobreza sin precedente reciente. Este es un paso importante para abordar las desigualdades. Sin embargo, la nueva ley ha dejado fuera a 9 millones de personas inmigrantes indocumentadas, muchas de las cuales han jugado roles esenciales en la lucha contra la pandemia de COVID-19 durante meses y cada vez están siendo más golpeados por la pobreza.
“Si bien la inclusión de niñas y niños inmigrantes y personas integrantes de familias de estatus mixto es un paso en la dirección correcta, es contraproducente para el bien público dejar fuera a millones de personas que residen en los Estados Unidos debido a su falta de estatus migratorio. Una de las lecciones más importantes de la pandemia de COVID-19 es que nadie debe quedarse atrás. Excluir a estas personas nos afecta a todos. Toda persona necesitada debería poder recibir ayuda durante estos tiempos difíciles”, afirmó Oscar Chacón, director ejecutivo de Alianza Americas.
“Nos alienta ver que millones de estadounidenses recibirán pronto el alivio que tanto necesitan a medida que nuestro país sigue enfrentando muchos obstáculos en medio de la actual pandemia. Sin embargo, estamos decepcionados por las oportunidades perdidas tal como la exclusión de un aumento del salario mínimo federal en la Ley del Plan de Rescate Estadounidense, que si se hubiera incluido, habría mejorado drásticamente la vida de muchas comunidades latinas y otras comunidades inmigrantes. Continuaremos instando al presidente Biden a que mantenga su promesa de apoyar a nuestras familias durante sus primeros 100 días en el cargo”, declaró Matt Nelson, director ejecutivo de Presente.org.
“Excluir a nuestras familias de los esfuerzos de ayuda continuará exacerbando las brechas entre ricos y pobres, dejando a los inmigrantes fuera del proceso de recuperación económica. Esperamos que la administración Biden mantenga su compromiso de tratar a todos los inmigrantes con humanidad, con respeto y trabajar para brindar alivio a todos ”, agregó Chacón.
