Immigrant Communities Are One Step Closer to Achieving Permanent Protections
National coalition of Latin American, immigrant-led organizations calls on the U.S. Senate to ensure passage of critical legislation
The following is a joint statement from Presente.org and Alianza Americas:
CHICAGO – Alianza Americas and Presente.org celebrate community organizing efforts, including those of its members, that led to the passage of the Dream and Promise Act (H.R.6) and the Farm Workforce Modernization Act in the U.S. House of Representatives yesterday. This is a critical first step, but the bills still need to be considered by the Senate, and assuming they were to pass the Senate, they will then need to be signed into law by the President. We call on the Senate to strip the harmful exclusionary provisions in H.R. 6 that create new bars to attain legalization and urge the Senate to pass these bills as soon as possible as millions of lives are at stake.
“Presente.org and Alianza Americas are committed to permanent status, full human rights, and inclusion of immigrant communities across the United States. The passage of the Dream and Promise Act in the House is an important step linking TPS (Temporary Protection Status) holders and those who entered the U.S. as children — as well as others who have temporary protections. The exclusionary provisions present in this bill, however, would result in continuing to leave many of our community members out. We urge the Senate to ensure passage of this critical legislation without these harmful provisions,” said Matt Nelson, executive director of Presente.org.
“Alianza Americas’ members have been actively organizing weekly actions, meetings with their legislators, and collectively working to elevate our communities’ issues. The passage in the House of the Dream and Promise Act and the Farm Workforce Modernization Act is a critical first step in ensuring legal status for millions of immigrants living in the United States. We call on the Senate to strip out exclusionary provisions that do not account for the institutional racism that plagues the criminal system and ensure its passage as soon as possible. We believe Congress can and should do better,” said Oscar Chacón, executive director of Alianza Americas.

Las comunidades inmigrantes están más cerca de lograr protecciones permanentes
Red de organizaciones latinoamericanas lideradas por inmigrantes pide al Senado de los Estados Unidos que garantice la aprobación de esta fundamental legislación
La siguiente es una declaración conjunta de Alianza Americas y Presente.org:
CHICAGO – Alianza Americas y Presente.org celebran los esfuerzos de organización comunitaria, incluidos los de sus miembros, que llevaron ayer a la aprobación de los proyectos de Ley de Sueños y Promesas (HR6) y Ley de Modernización de la Fuerza Laboral Agrícola en la Cámara de Representantes de los Estados Unidos. Este es un primer paso crítico, pero los proyectos de ley aún deben ser considerados por el Senado, y suponiendo que fueran aprobados por el Senado, entonces deberán ser promulgados por el Presidente. Hacemos un llamado al Senado para que elimine las disposiciones de exclusión dañinas en la HR6 que crean nuevas barreras para lograr un estatus migratorio legal para millones de personas, cuyas vidas están en juego, y le instamos a aprobar estos proyectos de ley lo antes posible.
“Presente.org y Alianza Americas están comprometidas con el estatus permanente, los derechos humanos plenos y la inclusión de las comunidades inmigrantes en los Estados Unidos. La aprobación de la Ley de Sueños y Promesas en la Cámara es un paso importante que une a las personas beneficiarias de TPS y aquellas que ingresaron a los EE. UU. cuando eran niños, así como a otros que tienen protecciones temporales. Las disposiciones de exclusión presentes en este proyecto de ley, sin embargo, dejaría fuera a muchas personas. Instamos al Senado a garantizar la aprobación de esta legislación fundamental sin estas disposiciones perjudiciales”, dijo Matt Nelson, director ejecutivo de Presente.org.
“Los miembros de Alianza Americas han estado organizando activamente acciones semanales, reuniones con sus legisladores y trabajando colectivamente para educar sobre los problemas de nuestras comunidades. La aprobación de la propuesta de Ley de Sueños y Promesas, como también la propuesta denominada Ley de Modernización de la Fuerza Laboral Agrícola representan un primer paso fundamental que de convertirse en ley permitirían la solicitud de visas de residencia permanente para millones de inmigrantes que viven en los Estados Unidos. Hacemos un llamado al Senado para que elimine los contenidos negativos de estas propuestas que fallan en considerar el racismo institucional del sistema penal, y asegurar su aprobación lo antes posible. Creemos que el Congreso puede y debe aprobar algo mejor”, dijo Oscar Chacón, director ejecutivo de Alianza Americas.
