The following is a joint statement from Alianza Americas and Presente.org:
CHICAGO β Today, U.S. Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) and Congresswoman Linda SΓ‘nchez (D- Calif.) introduced the Citizenship Act of 2021, legislation backed by the Biden Administration that ββ among other provisions ββ would allow undocumented immigrants living in the United States to eventually have the option to pursue U.S. citizenship by allowing them to apply for permanent residency visas.
βThe pieces of legislation filed today, point towards a much-needed reform in U.S. immigration law, one that may not come all at once. For real and tangible results to come about, it will be crucial to move forward with concrete and specifically targeted legislation. If enacted into law, ambitious legislative efforts will go a long way to bring us closer to a society that recognizes the invaluable role played by every member of our communities ββ regardless to where each of us was born or previous contact with the criminal justice systemβ said Oscar ChacΓ³n, executive director of Alianza Americas.
As organizations committed to creating an inclusive, equitable, and sustainable way of life for migrant communities living in the United States and across the Americas, Alianza Americas and Presente.org urge Congress and the Biden-Harris administration to use every legislative tool available to protect migrant communities. At the same time, since Inauguration Day, we have been calling on the President to use his executive authority to protect immigrants in vulnerable situations, including immediately issuing a new Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designation and ensuring meaningful and immediate access to all asylum seekers seeking protection. Additionally, we are working with members of Congress on other strategic legislative efforts such as the SECURE Act and DREAM Act.
βSince 2006, we have favored targeted legislative efforts as a preferred strategy to achieve a better U.S. immigration policy. While we support the idea of an entirely new, more humane, truly common-sense-driven immigration policy, we are convinced that getting there will take multiple, concrete steps. Therefore, we continue to urge our representatives and senators to support every legislative initiative intended to move us forward and avoid an everything-or-nothing approach. Our communities are desperately in need of concrete results now,β added ChacΓ³n.
βIf Congress and President Biden truly want to transform immigration policy, they need to advance bold legislation that creates a better future for us all. The Democratic party was brought to power by the will of the people, and we expect our leaders to deliver what our families need to thrive. What we need is courageous and fearless leaders to fulfill their duty and put our human rights ahead of political self-interest,β said Matt Nelson, executive director of Presente.org.

Organizaciones lΓderes en derechos humanos instan al liderazgo valiente en el Congreso a aprobar protecciones para las personas inmigrantes justas, funcionales y humanas

CHICAGO β Hoy, el senador estadounidense Bob Menendez (D-NJ) y la representante Linda SΓ‘nchez (D-CA) presentaron el proyecto de Ley de CiudadanΓa de 2021 (Citizenship Act of 2021), una iniciativa respaldada por la administraciΓ³n Biden que, entre otras disposiciones, permitirΓa a las personas inmigrantes que viven sin autorizaciΓ³n en los Estados Unidos solicitar residencia permanente, y, eventualmente, tener la opciΓ³n de solicitar la ciudadanΓa estadounidense.
βLas propuestas legislativas presentadas hoy apuntan hacia una necesaria reforma en la ley de inmigraciΓ³n de los Estados Unidos, la cual puede que no se produzca de una sola vez. Para que se obtengan resultados reales y tangibles, serΓ‘ crucial avanzar con propuestas de legislaciΓ³n concretas y especΓficamente dirigidas que, de ser aprobadas, contribuirΓ‘n a acercarnos a ser una sociedad que reconoce el papel invaluable que desempeΓ±a cada persona en nuestras comunidades, independientemente de su lugar de origen o de sus antecedentes en el sistema de justiciaβ, dijo Oscar ChacΓ³n, director ejecutivo de Alianza Americas.
Como organizaciones comprometidas con la creaciΓ³n de una forma de vida equitativa y sostenible para las comunidades inmigrantes que viven en los Estados Unidos y en las AmΓ©ricas, Alianza Americas y Presente.org instan al Congreso y a la administraciΓ³n Biden-Harris a utilizar todas las herramientas legislativas disponibles para proteger a nuestras comunidades. Desde el primer dΓa de la administraciΓ³n Biden-Harris hemos hecho un llamado al presidente a que ejerza su poder ejecutivo para proteger a las personas inmigrantes en situaciones de vulnerabilidad, mediante una nueva designaciΓ³n del Estatus de ProtecciΓ³n Temporal (TPS, por sus siglas en inglΓ©s), y garantizar el acceso inmediato al procedimiento de asilo, a todas las personas que buscan protecciΓ³n. AdemΓ‘s, estamos trabajando con miembros del Congreso en otros esfuerzos legislativos de gran importancia como lo son las propuestas conocidas como SECURE y DREAM.
βDesde 2006 hemos favorecido esfuerzos legislativos especΓficos, de alcance limitado, como estrategia viable para llegar poco a poco a una mejor polΓtica migratoria en los Estados Unidos. Si bien apoyamos la idea de una polΓtica completamente nueva y mΓ‘s humana, estamos convencidos de que llegar ahΓ requerirΓ‘ de mΓΊltiples pasos concretos. Por lo tanto, seguimos instando a nuestros representantes y senadores a apoyar toda iniciativa legislativa que tenga como objetivo permitirnos avanzar y evitar un enfoque de todo o nada. Nuestras comunidades necesitan desesperadamente resultados concretos ahoraβ, agregΓ³ ChacΓ³n.
βSi el Congreso y el presidente Biden realmente quieren transformar la polΓtica migratoria necesitan apoyar propuestas audaces que conlleven a un futuro mejor para todos nosotros. El Partido DemΓ³crata llegΓ³ al poder por la voluntad del pueblo y esperamos que nuestros lΓderes produzcan los resultados que nuestras familias necesitan para prosperar. Necesitamos lΓderes valientes y sin temor que cumplan con su deber y antepongan los derechos humanos ante cualquier otro interΓ©sβ, dijo Matt Nelson, director ejecutivo de Presente.org.

El proceso de discusiΓ³n y negociaciΓ³n legislativa apenas comienza. Es importante evitar ser vΓctimas de personas que pretendan sacar ventaja de esta situaciΓ³n para ofrecer servicios soluciones que hoy por hoy no existen. AΓΊn no hay legislaciΓ³n aprobada, no se dejen engaΓ±arβ, aΓ±adiΓ³ ChacΓ³n.
