Biden’s first 100 days must be met with swift action

The following is a joint statement from Presente.org and Alianza Americas:

CHICAGO – Today, the Biden-Harris administration enters the White House with the opportunity to right many injustices committed by former President Trump and his GOP and corporate enablers. As organizations committed to creating an inclusive, equitable and sustainable way of life for migrant communities living in the United States and across the Americas, we are cautiously encouraged by the Biden-Harris administration’s early efforts to prioritize changes in the U.S. immigration systems and law.

β€œWhat our country witnessed over the past four years is proof that our democracy’s life support system is in desperate need of repair. It is up to the incoming Biden administration and Congress to provide stability for our nation and implement policies that provide real relief and steady support to people whose lives have been ignored and excluded for far too long”, states Matt Nelson, executive director of Presente.org. β€œNot the least of them have been immigrant communities. Millions of migrant families continue to struggle to survive as the COVID-19 pandemic rages on, with many unable to receive federal relief support.”

Following President Biden taking the oath of office, β€œwe urge him to immediately reestablish the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program and expand eligibility for Temporary Protected Status (TPS), end the Trump administration’s Remain in Mexico migration policy, halt border wall construction, and end the Muslim, Africa, and asylum bans”, Nelson said.

β€œNow that the Democratic party holds power in the White House, the U.S. House of Representatives, and the U.S. Senate, it’s imperative that the human rights of migrant communities are affirmed and upheld”, states Oscar ChacΓ³n, executive director of Alianza Americas. β€œFurthermore, the installment of the Biden-Harris Administration represents the respect of the will of the people and an opportunity to strengthen the rule of law by holding white supremacists accountable for the violence they’ve inflicted on our communities and elected officials.”.

Additionally, β€œwe urge the Biden team to take swift action to protect migrant communities in its first 100 days by doing the following:

  • Adopt a pro-migrant narrative to battle xenophobia and white nationalism;
  • The decisive use of presidential authority to protect immigrants in vulnerable situations and to reorient the way in which current legislation is applied, including asylum law and other forms of humanitarian protection;
  • An unequivocal commitment to support the legislative proposals that are presented in Congress aimed at reforming the Immigration Policy;
  • Unequivocal support for broad legislative reforms in the economic and social sphere that benefit low- and middle-income families, which would have a direct impact on immigrant populations residing in the United States; a reorientation in US foreign policy towards Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, and the rest of Latin America

We’re hopeful that if these changes are adopted and promoted as common agenda points between Congress and the Executive Branch, we will see great benefits for immigrant communities, particularly from Latin America and the Caribbean. As organizations committed to work towards the well-being and prosperity of communities across the U.S. and the AmΓ©ricas, we look forward to working with the newly installed Biden-Harris Administration to help fulfill the aspirations of everyone who are convinced that better days are ahead for our communities.

Las comunidades migrantes y latinas piden protecciΓ³n inmediata a la administraciΓ³n Biden-Harris

AcciΓ³n resolutiva debe ser la caracterΓ­stica de los los primeros 100 dΓ­as

Chicago, IL – Hoy, la administraciΓ³n Biden-Harris llega a la Casa Blanca con la oportunidad de corregir muchas injusticias cometidas por el ex presidente Trump y sus aliados republicanos y del sector privado. Como organizaciones comprometidas con la construcciΓ³n de una forma de vida inclusiva, equitativa y sostenible para las comunidades migrantes latinoamericanas que viven en los Estados Unidos y en sus paΓ­ses de origen, recibimos con optimismo y cautela los primeros esfuerzos de la administraciΓ³n Biden para priorizar los cambios en los procedimientos y legislaciΓ³n sobre inmigraciΓ³n de los EE. UU.

β€œLo que nuestro paΓ­s viviΓ³ durante los ΓΊltimos cuatro aΓ±os es evidencia de que el sistema que sostiene nuestra democracia necesita atenciΓ³n urgente. Depende de la administraciΓ³n entrante y del Congreso crear estabilidad para nuestra naciΓ³n y poner en prΓ‘ctica polΓ­ticas que brinden alivio real y un apoyo constante a las personas ignoradas y excluidas durante demasiado tiempo, incluyendo a las comunidades migrantes”, opina Matt Nelson, director ejecutivo de Presente.org. β€œMillones de familias migrantes continΓΊan luchando por sobrevivir mientras la pandemia de covid-19 continΓΊa, y muchas de ellas fueron excluidas de la ayuda federal”, aΓ±ade.

Luego de la toma de juramento por parte del presidente Biden, β€œle instamos a restablecer inmediatamente el programa AcciΓ³n Diferida para los Llegados en la Infancia (DACA, por sus siglas en inglΓ©s) y ampliar la elegibilidad para el Estatus de ProtecciΓ³n Temporal (TPS), poner fin a la polΓ­tica migratoria de “QuΓ©date en MΓ©xico” (Migrant Protection Protocols) de la administraciΓ³n Trump, poner fin a la construcciΓ³n del muro fronterizo y poner fin a las prohibiciones de ingreso para personas musulmanas, africanas y solicitantes de asilo.

β€œAhora que el Partido DemΓ³crata se encuentra en la Casa Blanca, y es mayorΓ­a en la CΓ‘mara de Representantes y en el Senado de los Estados Unidos, es imperativo que los derechos humanos de las comunidades migrantes sean garantizados y protegidos”, afirma Oscar ChacΓ³n, director ejecutivo de Alianza Americas. β€œAdemΓ‘s, el inicio de la administraciΓ³n Biden-Harris representa el respeto de la voluntad del pueblo y una oportunidad para fortalecer el estado de derecho, incluyendo investigar y sancionar a los supremacistas blancos responsables de la violencia ejercida contra nuestras comunidades y funcionarios electos”, agrega.

AdemΓ‘s, β€œinstamos a la administraciΓ³n Biden a tomar las siguientes medidas inmediatas para proteger a las comunidades inmigrantes durante sus primeros 100 dΓ­as:

  • Adoptar una narrativa en favor de las personas migrantes para combatir la xenofobia y el nacionalismo blanco;
  • El ejercicio decisivo de la autoridad presidencial para proteger a personas inmigrantes en situaciones de vulnerabilidad y reorientar la aplicaciΓ³n de la legislaciΓ³n vigente, en materia de asilo y otras formas de protecciΓ³n humanitaria;
  • Compromiso inequΓ­voco de apoyar las propuestas legislativas que se presenten en el Congreso dirigidas a reformar la polΓ­tica migratoria;
  • Apoyo inequΓ­voco a reformas legislativas amplias en el Γ‘mbito econΓ³mico y social de beneficio para familias de ingresos bajos y medios, las cuales tendrΓ­an un impacto directo en las poblaciones inmigrantes que residen en los EE. UU.;
  • Reorientar la polΓ­tica exterior de los EE. UU. hacia MΓ©xico, CentroamΓ©rica, el Caribe y el resto de AmΓ©rica Latina”.

Tenemos la esperanza de que si estos cambios se adoptan y promueven como puntos de agenda comunes entre el Congreso y el Poder Ejecutivo, veremos grandes beneficios para las comunidades inmigrantes, particularmente de AmΓ©rica Latina y el Caribe.
