Statement from Presente.org’s Executive Director, Matt Nelson regarding today’s oral arguments in the 2020 Census citizenship question case at the U.S. Supreme Court:
“The census question in front of the Supreme Court makes it clear that we must rescue a fair and inclusive democracy from the death grip of the Trump Administration. Adding a citizenship question to the census would embolden white supremacists both inside and outside of the White House. This is a direct attack on Latinx communities and a craven attempt to codify some of the worst aspects of racism and xenophobia into the fundamental laws of our land.
“Fear and hate should not dictate laws and policy that will decide who is counted, as a full human being, and who can be considered part of our democracy. Our communities will continue to show great courage as we face the administrations hateful immigration agenda. The Court’s duty is to protect democracy and represent the best of America. Adding a citizenship question to the census would reflect our country at its worst.”
