Statement from Presente.orgโ€™s Executive Director, Matt Nelson regarding todayโ€™s oral arguments in the 2020 Census citizenship question case at the U.S. Supreme Court:

“The census question in front of the Supreme Court makes it clear that we must rescue a fair and inclusive democracy from the death grip of the Trump Administration. Adding a citizenship question to the census would embolden white supremacists both inside and outside of the White House. This is a direct attack on Latinx communities and a craven attempt to codify some of the worst aspects of racism and xenophobia into the fundamental laws of our land.

โ€œFear and hate should not dictate laws and policy that will decide who is counted, as a full human being, and who can be considered part of our democracy. Our communities will continue to show great courage as we face the administrations hateful immigration agenda. The Courtโ€™s duty is to protect democracy and represent the best of America. Adding a citizenship question to the census would reflect our country at its worst.โ€
