As Russia’s shocking invasion of Ukraine is causing a new refugee crisis in Europe, Ukraine’s neighbors are welcoming and accepting Ukrainians fleeing the violence. The United States, Europe, and other allies are taking swift action to help the Ukrainian people, from humanitarian aid packages to loosening visa restrictions. This is urgently needed at this time, when Russia is threatening democracies everywhere.

In light of Congress facing a March 11 deadline to pass the government spending bill, which includes funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and immigration detention, and as Europe confronts the Ukraine migration crisis, Alianza Americas will host a virtual press conference on its #FreedomForAll campaign. The campaign calls to end the criminalization of migrants, abolish immigration detention, and invest in universal legal representation for migrants.

On International Women’s Day, Mar. 8, women leaders of migrant rights organizations across the U.S. call for policies that address gender violence and end the impunity for gender crimes in Central America and Mexico.

Alianza Americas — a coalition of 55 migrant-led groups in some 14 states — is fully integrating Presente.org, the largest Latinx digital organizing group in the U.S., into its organizational structure. Alianza Americas and Presente are longtime collaborators in advocating for a more inclusive, equitable and sustainable way of life for Latinx and migrant communities living in the United States and across the Americas.
