National Latinx Civil Rights Group Celebrates Another Season of ‘One Day At A Time’

Pro-Latinx Representation in Hollywood is a must! Culture is power and #RepresentationMatters.

March 26, 2018

Statement from Matt Nelson, Executive Director, Presente.org:

"On behalf of our 500,000 Presente members nationwide, we celebrate Netflix doing the right thing and renewing One Day at a Time for a 3rd season! This is a great step forward, as there are far too few strong and positive Latinx and immigrant characters on television.

"Latinx portrayals in media like Netflix greatly shape public perceptions of our communities, which, in turn, shape how we are treated in the workplace, by law enforcement, and in policy decisions.

"One Day at a Time is a ray of light at a time when Latinx communities are suffering from political vilification and accelerated xenophobia, amplified by the overall negative media depiction of our community, even though Latinos are 17.8 percent of the U.S. population, we only comprise 5.8 percent of speaking roles in television and film.

"Netflix has the potential to be cutting edge leaders in producing shows that are inclusive, funny, culturally influential — and to earn our community’s loyalty. We urge them to continue to support affirming shows like One Day at a Time."
