Trump Praises Men Who Beat Up Homeless Man for Being Latino, Latinos Outraged

Aug. 20, 2015

Arturo Carmona, Presente Action's Executive Director, issued the following statement in response to reports from the Boston Globe that Trump praised the “passion” of two brothers who beat up a homeless man for being Latino:

“We are horrified to learn that Trump supporters have beaten a homeless Latino man in Trump's name, and more horrified to see Trump praising their 'passion' in response. The hateful language being spewed by Donald Trump is bad for America, and is directly inciting violence against Latinos.

“This hateful violent episode started with Trump, but has been championed by countless candidates including Scott Walker, Ted Cruz, Mike Huckabee, Rand Paul, Bobby Jindal, and Rick Santorum, who are all now calling for an end to birthright citizenship and referencing Latinos in their efforts. Even Hillary Clinton is now urging the deportation of child refugees facing possible death in their country of birth.

"This race to the bottom has made it clear that far too many candidates feel Latino lives simply do not have value. But make no mistake— Latinos make up 10% of our nation’s voters, and have billions of dollars in spending power. We won’t forget which candidates devalued our families, our children, and our very lives for the sake of political gain come November 2016."

Two brothers orchestrated the brutal assault— which appears to include breaking multiple bones and urinating on their victim. As way of explanation, as reported by the Boston Globe, one of the brothers told police: "Donald Trump was right, all these illegals need to be deported.” Trump responded: “it would be a shame . . . I will say that people who are following me are very passionate. They love this country and they want this country to be great again. They are passionate.”

Presente Action’s members have petitioned GOP leadership to bar Trump from GOP debates, and denounce his hateful and violent language and aims.

The Presente Action community will continue to fight back against this hateful and dangerous political climate as the 2016 race continues.
