Presente.org: Reduced Emissions Great First Step, But Latinos Deserve Commitment to End Reliance on Toxic Energy

April 29, 2015

Statement from Arturo Carmona, Executive Director of Presente.org, on Gov. Jerry Brown’s commitment today to cut California’s green house gas emissions:

"We commend the governor for taking this important step in setting aggressive benchmarks that will cut toxic greenhouse gas emissions, and urge the California legislature to follow suit and ensure that these regulations are set in stone to protect our families for generations to come. Unfortunately, reducing toxic emissions alone will not address the deep environmental inequities that exist in our state due to our reliance on fossil fuels, where working-class families continue to live in some of the most polluted communities in the nation.

More than vague emissions targets, we need legislation that transitions us away from fossil fuels that cause sky-high cancer and asthma rates in Latino communities across the state, and we need to ensure new revenue and economic development goes to those communities hardest hit by toxic pollution and extreme weather from the changing climate.”
