PRESENTE.ORG RESPONDS TO PRESIDENT OBAMA’S ANNOUNCEMENT TO “BAN THE BOX” FOR FEDERAL EMPLOYERS, ADDRESSING EMPLOYMENT DISCRIMINATION

AFTER CIVIL RIGHTS AND RACIAL JUSTICE COALITION DELIVERS MORE THAN 130,000 SIGNATURES TO THE WHITE HOUSE, THE PRESIDENT TAKES ACTION.

Nov. 2, 2015

Statement from Presente.org’s Managing Director, Matt Nelson:

"President Obama's decision to ban the box on federal job applications is an important step forward in stopping employment discrimination against formerly incarcerated people," said Matt Nelson, managing director of Presente.org. "We are pleased President Obama has heard the voices demanding reform, and we encourage him to continue pushing to end all forms of employment discrimination against people who have been convicted in the past. Too often, people who are trying to get back on their feet are unjustly blocked from opportunities that the rest of us take for granted. This robs them of the chance to rebuild their lives, and it robs society of the benefit of their skills and talents. This kind of discrimination helps no one and magnifies the rampant inequality that exists at every stage of the criminal justice system. It is long past time to end it once and for all."
