Presente.org Statement on Progressive Caucus Hearing on Unaccompanied Children at U.S. Border

July 29, 2014

Following a hearing of the Congressional Progressive Caucus on the humanitarian concerns surrounding the unaccompanied children crossing into the United States, Arturo Carmona, Executive Director of Presente.org, the nation’s largest online Latino organizing group, released the following statement:

“Presente.org and our Latino communities commend the progressive caucus for listening to the children undergoing traumatic events at the border. Increasingly during this debate, children have been vilified instead of protected – and have rarely been given the chance to tell their own story.

“The next important order of business for lawmakers is to stop the dubiously-named HUMANE act from passing through Congress and limiting protections for vulnerable Central American children – putting them on a fast-track to deportation and neglect.”
