“ You cannot uneducate the person who has learned to read. You cannot humiliate the person who feels pride. You cannot oppress the people who are not afraid anymore. ” – César Chávez, UFW

In response to reports that ICE Director John Morton resigned his position today, Arturo Carmona, Executive Director of Presente.org, issued this statement:

June 17, 2013

"The resignation of John Morton is welcome news, given his leadership role and agressive tone in defending SCOMM and other policies that are among the worst immigration policies in US history" said Arturo Carmona, Executive Director of Presente.org "Morton's resignation and President Obama's response to it, must be viewed as nothing less than a litmus test of the President's commitment to making a real difference in immigrant lives as well as to real immigration reform, which begins with the President. Failure to replace Morton with someone more committed to immigrants, failing to take the resignation as an opportunity to shift or fundamentally alter failed policies that continue to cause massive immigrant grief, will say much about how committed President Obama is to real reform and to immigrant communities."
