Senator Schumer Urged to Return Prison Industry Donations

April 2, 2013

Following actions in New York and other US cities, Presente Action renews its calls on Senator Charles "Chuck" Schumer to return monies he received from lobbyists for the prison industry with a record of trying to influence immigration reform.

"We call on Senator Schumer to stop making excuses and start giving the immigrant prison lobby their money back" said Arturo Carmona, Executive Director of Presente Action. "Senator Schumer and his affiliated PAC have taken campaign contributions from companies and from lobbying firms like Akin Gump Strauss Hauer Feld, which lobbies on behalf of some of the largest immigrant prison building and management firms in the country. Receiving money from the immigrant prison lobby and then denying it is not what Latino voters call leadership on immigration reform. On immigration, Senator Schumer has to put people before prisons."

According to the Daily Caller news outlet, "Schumer and his affliated PAC received $35,500 in campaign contributions this past election cycle from Fidelity Investments (FMR Corp.), which disclosed in 2010 a 14.57 percent stake, worth $141.48 million, in the private corrections facilities provider GEO Group. It also owns a stake in the Corrections Corporation of America (CCA), according to an SEC filing. Schumer also accepted $64,243 from the lobbying firm Akin Gump et al, which lobbies on behalf of CCA. GEO Group and CCA own and operate detention facilities under contract with federal, state and municipal governments."

According to ENLACE (http://enlaceintl.org/), which produced an in-depth report on prison firm lobbying on immigration, the facts provided below point to Schumer's relationship with the immigrant prison lobby.
