Anaheim Residents & Latino Leaders Call on CA Atty. Gen Kamala Harris to Conduct Full Investigation of Anaheim Police Department

In Press Conference, Demand Protection From Rogue

July 30, 2012

Residents of Anaheim, including family who've lost members at the hands of the Anaheim Police Department, held a press conference in conjunction with Presente.org and local leaders calling on California State Attorney General Kamala Harris to conduct a full investigation of the department.

“Attorney General Harris needs to understand that what is happening in Anaheim is extraordinarily bad, and requires an extraordinarily swift response,” said Arturo Carmona, Executive Director of Presente.org. "Anaheim officials, including Police Chief John Welter, have been aware of abusive force and killing by Anaheim police officers for some time - and they have done nothing, nothing that leads us to believe they can conduct a fair, independent and swift investigation into the widespread abuses of the Anaheim Police Department. Their failure endangers the lives of all Anaheim citizens. That's why we're here today."

Anaheim has seen a rash of police-involved shooting incidents, including the case of Manuel Diaz, an unarmed man, and the incident involving shooting rubber bullets and releasing dogs on a crowd that included children, among other incidents. Residents and community groups delivered almost 18,000 signatures, collected by Presente.org, demanding that Attorney General Harris help protect Anaheim by committing to a full investigation of those violent incidents involving the Anaheim police department.

Carmona was joined by residents that have been directly impacted by the violence and abuse of the Anaheim police department. “Anaheim police and local authorities have proven that they cannot investigate themselves," said Anaheim resident Luisa Sanchez, friend of shooting victim Joe Acevedo. Sanchez is also a member of Anaheim Cruzaders, a neighborhood advocacy group demanding an end to police violence and abuse. "Otherwise, we never would've reached this point of crisis. Chief John Welter is endangering the citizens of Anaheim with his inaction. We are asking Attorney General Harris to protect the people of Anaheim. We need a full investigation of all the violence and abuse perpetrated by the Anaheim police -- right now. Nothing else will protect us from this out-of-control violence and abuse of authority.”
