Presente.org Statement on ICE Reform Announcement

STATEMENT BY ARTURO CARMONA, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, PRESENTE.ORG, IN RESPONSE TO FRIDAY’S ANNOUNCEMENT BY ICE TO REFORM SECURE COMMUNITIES DEPORTATION PROGRAM

Dec. 22, 2012

Yesterday's announcement by ICE is a welcome change, but leaves many critical issues unresolved. Immigrants in the U.S. need concrete steps to end the hardship in their communities. Most of all, we need to reform the immigration system in a way that prioritizes respect for immigrants.

Weapplaud the Obama Administration for this announcement, but we also encourage the President to help keep immigrant families together by not deporting theparents. Until the causes of the deportations like SCOMM, 287g, and other failed programs are abolished, the ICE reforms will be of limited impact in the lives of immigrants in this country.
