"The people in this country are not illegal"

Thank Rep. John Conyers

Dear Friend,

In case you missed the immigration hearings in the House this week, we wanted to share this with you. Rep. John Conyers began the hearings by saying, "I hope no one uses the term 'illegal immigrants' here today...The people in this country are not illegal. They are out of status."1 This was a ray of light amid hours of anti-migrant misinformation and enforcement-only rhetoric in the Republican-led House.

It takes real courage to stay focused on justice for the 11 million undocumented people living in fear in our nation today. Rep. Conyers needs support from us to help him stay on track and to boost his efforts. Let's tell him that by speaking to our immigrant community's humanity—Rep. Conyers speaks for us!

Rep. Conyers is the ranking Democrat in the main House committee discussing immigration reform this year. This isn't the first time he's stood up for our community in that committee. Last year, when Republicans organized a hearing to promote English-only legislation, Rep. Conyers protested by speaking to the committee in Spanish.2 Supporting people in the Judiciary committee like Rep. Conyers will help us get more favorable immigration legislation out of the House.

Sometimes the fight requires us to hold folks accountable; other times the fight needs us to express our gratitude for deeds well done. Now is the time to thank Rep. Conyers.

The Senate is going to hold hearings on immigration next week. Thanking Rep. Conyers this week will show the Senate the sort of support we expect for our community next week.

It always helps to have our friends' backs.

Thanks and ¡adelante!
