CNN: A climate coverage disaster

Here's the message we sent to our members. After you've read it, please add your voice.

UNACCEPTABLE: CNN dedicated five times more air time to fossil fuel advertising than it did to climate news coverage.

Tell CNN to increase reporting on the growing climate crisis!

Dear Friend,

CNN is supposed to cover the news, not serve greedy, lying corporations and act like puppets of the fossil fuel industry. It's a climate coverage disgrace. Millions of Americans consider CNN a trusted news source — but its viewers are being misled.

In the weeks following announcements that 2015 was the hottest year on record and that February 2016 was the hottest month on record, CNN aired five times more fossil fuel advertising than climate reporting.1 It’s unacceptable that some of the worst corporations on the planet are allowed to bully and buy the influence of major news outlets — at the expense of our communities, our health, and our future livelihoods.

Sign the petition to CNN and tell them: Stop shilling for Big Oil and start reporting on climate change.

Knowledge is power. And if more people knew the truth about climate change, we could scale back our reliance on fossil fuels, which would have a real impact on our lives. Gas-fired power plants, fracking, and smog pollution have all been disproportionately concentrated in working class and Latinx neighborhoods — places that are already burdened with high levels of asthma, cardiovascular diseases, increased mortality rates, and other alarming conditions afflicting our communities.2

The American Petroleum Institute, a lobbying group that denies climate change, is getting more coverage than the news about the impacts of massive-scale climate change. And this doesn’t even include all of the ads from individual fossil fuel companies and the Koch brothers.

In fact, only one of CNN's three woefully inadequate reports about temperature records made any mention of "climate change" or "global warming" — and none addressed carbon pollution from the fossil fuel industry or any of the other ways in which corporations are causing climate change.

Tell CNN: Your climate silence is unacceptable.

As one of the largest news organizations on the planet, CNN must do better. That's why we've joined a coalition of organizations who are demanding that CNN #ReportOnClimate.
