#BastaFacebook! Stop Facebook from stealing data and silencing immigrants!

Here's the message we sent to our members. After you've read it, please add your voice.

Dear Friend,

Despite a horrible reputation of compromising its users' personal information, Facebook plans to require U.S. Citizenship — a U.S. government-issued ID and social security number — to purchase political ads.1

Its new ad policies would force users to give up even more sensitive, personal information and would block incredible political activists like DREAMers, who have spent most of their lives in the U.S., from fully engaging in the democratic process via Facebook's platform.

Tell Facebook: ¡Basta ya! Let the social media giant know that their new ID requirements are recklessly undemocratic, intrusive, and a pathetic attempt to divert attention from their fundamental security problems.

BastaFacebook

Facebook broadly identifies a "political ad" as advocating for "national issues of public importance" such as immigration.2 Not only would Facebook's new ad policies exclude 11 million U.S. residents, including DREAMers, from fully participating in our democracy, but this company is NOT to be trusted with users' personal data. Right now, the defunct political data firm Cambridge Analytica is under federal investigation for, among other breaches, harvesting the private information of more than 50 million Facebook users to help sway the 2016 election.3

Facebook must reverse its dangerous policy, or stop selling political ads altogether until it can fully secure the data it collects and adequately protect our information from attack.

Facebook has also recently admitted that a shady Russian company based in the Kremlin purchased more than $100,000 worth of political ads — about 3,000 ads! — to disrupt the 2016 presidential election.Based on the company's inability to protect users' data, there's a good chance that Facebook's new political ad policies won't keep Russian hackers at bay.

Give Facebook our passport and social security number?!?! Facebook should NOT be trusted with MORE private information. According to its new policies, to purchase a political ad "you'll also need to upload a photo of your picture ID (either a U.S. passport or U.S. driver's license), and enter the last 4 digits of your Social Security number."5

#BastaFacebook! Urge Facebook to stop their new ID requirements for political ad buys.

Not only is Facebook undermining our democracy by excluding those without social security numbers from fully raising their political voices, but they can't even be trusted with the information they already have. Let's not give Russian hackers or anyone else more private information, okay?

Tell Facebook: ¡Basta ya! Let the social media giant know that their new ID requirements for political ad buys are recklessly undemocratic, intrusive, and a pathetic attempt to divert attention from their fundamental security problems.

Industry trade groups have consistently listed Facebook as the largest and most important social media platform for marketers.6 It is crucial that DREAMers and other Latinx organizers continue to have full access to Facebook's capabilities to get their messaging out to the public. At the same time, no organizers should have their identities compromised, further undermining our democracy.

In signing our action, you are letting Facebook know that we are paying attention as a community and that they will be held accountable for undermining the political voices and privacy of our organizers.

Thanks for all that you do. Keep fighting!
